Using Frosting Varnish

tape the stencil inside a paper mask There is a rather ugly brick wall outside my kitchen window. I would love to look out onto a rickety picket fence like you might find round a country cottage. With such a fence here, however, someone would steal the soil from the garden. The next best option is to create an image of a picket fence on the window to take my eyes off the brick wall and to take the eyes of anyone outside off the untidy kitchen.
mix the paint and the varnish The first step is to tape a stencil inside a paper frame and mix the paint. Ordinary paint is not suitable for glass so I am using a mixture of stencil paint and frosting varnish.
apply a small amount of paint to a rag I find that a brush carries too much paint so I put some of the paint mixture onto a rag then dab the rag onto some paper before going near the stencil. Too much paint is the main cause of my failed stencilling projects.
place the stencil in position and dab the rag onto the stencil I then used some tape to hold the stencil and mask in position. I applied the paint with a gentle dabbing action. Once the design was applied, I lined up the stencil to draw another fence panel along side. After use, the stencil and other materials can be cleaned in warm soapy water so that they can be used again. I left the window without curtains for several hours to give the paint chance to dry. The finished result is below - not perfect but nicer to look at than the brick wall.
