1. Measure the existing hinge from the top corner to the end of the long bar on the window frame. When ordering the replacement hinges, it is not essential that the length is exactly the same, but the lengths should be similar. The window in the photographs has 8 inch hinges. The hinges at both sides of the window should be replaced, even if only one is faulty. Most modern windows use hinges with a width or stack height of 13 or 14 mm. Older windows use thicker hinges. A selection of window hinges can be purchase in this eBay shop. |

2. Remove the old hinge. Normally there will be three screws holding the hinge to the frame and three more holding the hinge to the window. Sometimes the hinge may have been fitted with rivets instead of screws. Rivets can be removed by placing a suitable bit in an electric drill at the centre of the rivet and drilling the head off. |
3. Support the window. During the procedure, a second person is required to support the window. If the hinge at one side is replaced before the hinge at the other side is removed, there will always be at least one hinge providing additional support. |
4. Fit the new hinge to the frame. The top of the hinge should be placed against the top corner of the frame. If the fitting holes do not match, new holes can be made with the screws. uPVC frames have a resistance to screws similar to that of wood. |
5. Fit the hinge to the window. The top of the hinge should be near to the top of the window but, after fitting one or two screws, check to see that the window will close properly before fitting the remaining screws. If the window does not close properly, it will be necessary to fit the hinge slightly higher or slightly lower on the window. |
